What would you do if you opened up your bag of fresh broccoli for dinner and found a little slug happily feeding (sliming?) away inside? Sorry, folks. No picture this time. I couldn’t get that thing out of my sight fast enough.

Yuck. This happened a lot with our garden produce this summer. No Kvale relation could throw away perfectly good produce, right? I’d just submerge the whole thing in a sink full of water, lift the slug out with a slotted spoon, and cast him into the outer darkness. That way you have clean veggies, you don’t have to touch anything slimy with your fingers, and nothing has gone to waste!
We’ve found some amazing stuff in our food here. Yes, there are worms, maggots, and general creepy crawlies. My personal favorite was a live bee in a unopened/fresh from the store brown sugar. What do we do? We sift everything twice, peel everything before eating, soak our fruits and veggies in iodine for 20 minutes, and pray that the unseen creepies that survive aren’t too sinister! Did you eat the broccoli?
I would probably run back to the store – but I do live in a different country than you…what did you do?
Hannah, you’re right. I guess throwing it away was really out of the question all along. 🙂 I just washed it thoroughly to eliminate all traces of slug slime and steamed it a little bit longer than normal, to make myself feel better about it. And, thank you, Julie for making me feel really good about finding a mere slug in my produce. Bring on the slugs–at least I don’t have to soak anything in iodine! The bee in the brown sugar is hilarious, by the way! And, Tina, unfortunately, running back to the store wasn’t a good option since I would have been running for two miles! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
